Upstream took a leading role in forming the National Healthy Living Alliance (HLA), an independent focus for Healthy Living Centres that had developed under the Big Lottery (originally the New Opportunities Fund) HLC programme. The Alliance was launched in December 2005 by the then Minister of Health and received support from the Department of Health and the Big Lottery Fund.
The aims of the Alliance included raising the profile of Healthy Living Centres with national and local government and in particular the successful work and expertise of HLCs in tackling community health and care issues in the broadest possible sense. The Aims also included raising the standard and effectiveness of HLCs through regional networks, and linking with other national organisations with an interest in holistic and preventative well-being.
From 2010 the Alliance has been hosted by Well UK, which itself is a social enterprise consortium of Healthy Living Centre's based in the South West. For more information, see www.healthylivingalliance.org or www.welluk.org
