The Upstream project builds on the understanding that health is a proper balance between mental, physical and social well-being. To that end, mentors link activities wherever possible to ‘healthy lifestyle’ initiatives prompted by the Primary Care Trust and Local Authority in line with government priorities and the ‘Choosing Health’ agenda on, for example, exercise, healthy eating, alcohol abuse and smoking. Mentors recognise that people are more likely to take better care of their health if they are enjoying themselves and motivated to stay healthy. Primary Care Trust ‘smoking cessation’ and ‘exercise promotion’ officers, among others, work alongside the mentor team. Here are some examples of ‘healthy living’ that are built in to activities:
