Knitted river stretches all the way to Downing street. An independent Upstream group were proud to part of this "knitition" The knitted river (100,000 squares) stretched 250m and curved accross the Thames to Downing Street. The aim before the G8 summit was to publicise the water shortage in Africa

Governance

Upstream legal status 

Upstream is a Charity (No. 1087185 ) and a Company limited by guarantee (No. 41144011 ). The Registered Office is: 4 Market Street, Crediton, Devon EX17 2AJ. Upstream is VAT registered (No. 824 6795 00).

Upstream policies, monitoring and performance management 

Upstream has a wide range of policies in place, include Employment and Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, Risk Management, Confidentiality, and many others.

Upstream is a Big Lottery Healthy Living Centre Pathfinder and has been fully involved in the Big Lottery HLC Development and Support Programme, together with the policies and practices that have been developed through that programme, including a performance management toolkit.

Upstream policies, processes and governance have been monitored rigorously through the Big Lottery ‘Annual Monitoring Report’ system. Upstream also complies with all the requirements of Devon County Council contractual arrangements through its contract for Link Age Plus.

Board of Trustees 

Dr Tim Dudgeon (Chairman) General Practitioner and senior partner in a busy rural practice in the moorland town of Moretonhampstead. He is also the lead GP at the Moretonhampstead Community Hospital, a former chair of the National Association of Community Hospitals, and former chair of Game Conservancy Committee for Devon. 

Topsy Murray (Vice Chair) has worked for 20 years in NHS management and was Chief Executive of the Mid Devon Primary Care Group and Associate Director of Primary Care for the South West Peninsula Strategic Health Authority. She has been a JP for 22 years, is on the Devon and Cornwall Probation Board, and is Chairman of Governors of the Maynard School in Exeter.

Dr Mike Dixon, OBE, has been a GP in Cullompton for more than 20 years. Since 1998 he has been Chair of the NHS Alliance and his national roles include membership of the National Quality Task Force, the Primary Care Workforce Review, the Cabinet Committee on Bureaucracy in General Practice, and many other roles. 

Dr Peter Twomey, has been a GP in Crediton for many years and originally conceived the idea for Upstream arising out of his own experience with local people. He also acts as Honorary Medical Consultant for Upstream. 

Bernard Frowd, OBE, was formerly Chief Executive & Treasurer of Exeter City Council, Chief Executive of Exeter City Football Club, Governor of Dartington College of Arts, and Hon. Treasurer and Director of South West Tourism. 

Richard Hull is a retired solicitor who was a partner with Stephens & Scown in Exeter and practised in the area since 1979. He has always lived in Mid Devon.

Diana Johnson is a freelance arts consultant as practitioner, researcher and adviser on the arts within sustainable economic, social and environmental development. Diana is particularly well-known for her experience of arts in a rural regeneration context. 

Upstream Members 

Under its Memorandum & Articles of Agreement, Upstream has a wide range of ‘Member’ organisations from both the voluntary and statutory sectors. Members have voting rights at the AGM.
