This is a community exercise programme based on the principle of taking at least 30 minutes of meaningful exercise at least 5 times each week. Upstream helped to set up this programme, funded by Sport England and originally led by Mid Devon District Council, with support from Devon Health and County Authorities. Under the programme, Upstream hosted a ‘Community Activator’ responsible for setting up local community groups that encouraged participation in exercise and sporting activities. Upstream also promoted exercise activities for people in the workplace and for people in sheltered accommodation and those with learning difficulties. One of the most successful workplace projects was with 4 teams from Reuters News Agency who cycled and ran regularly after work for a couple of months to simulate a race around the whole of Ireland. Progress was mapped by the Upstream organiser and competition heightened by regular updates.
The programme was developed and extended to the whole of Devon in 2009, when it was led by Westbank and involved several District Authorities as well as Devon Health and County Authorities. Once again, Upstream hosted the 5x30 Activator in Mid Devon.
